An integrated project with Council support on the Waverton Peninsula
The Museum of Sydney Harbour concept is designed for maximum community access and participation. It is also designed to complement the other heritage features on the Waverton peninsula; The Coal Loader, Quarantine Launch Depot, Balls Head, its indigenous sites, and the Bay itself.
The Western Harbour Tunnel project will dominate the western shore of Berrys Bay until around 2025.
If all goes well, the area around Woodleys Shed may not be required as part of the tunnel works and could become available for earlier treatment under the Master Plan which is yet to evolve.
Since May 2020 Sydney Heritage Fleet has consulted with local Precinct Committees, North Sydney Council, politicians, government and its relevant departments. The reaction has been broadly supportive.
In February 2021, North Sydney Council passed a unanimous resolution in two parts;
THAT Council resolves to seek to have the NSW Government as soon as possible and prior to the commencement of the proposed tunnel project, to cause land on the Western side of Berrys Bay … to be brought within the Waverton Peninsula Reserve (together with the Coal Loader and Carradah Park lands already within the Reserve as part of the Waverton Peninsula Reserve Trust, under the care and control of Council.
THAT Council, recognising broad community support for the concept plans provided by the Sydney Heritage Fleet for the Museum of Sydney Harbour as the base for its fleet in Berrys Bay, resolves to work with the Sydney Heritage Fleet and the North Sydney community with a view to making the concept plan a reality.
Moving into 2022, the Fleet continues to work with stakeholders and plans continuing and closer relationships as the community, the Community Stakeholders Working Group, Waverton Peninsula Working Group and government firm ideas for the future of the western shore of Berrys Bay.
Sydney Heritage Fleet is committed to deep engagement with the community on our proposal for Berrys Bay, to ensure it is welcomed, and developed in ways that meet both our needs and those of the local community.
